THE TONEWOOD

Over the centuries one particular type of wood has stood the test of time in traditional instrument making, especially for its sonic qualities: European Spruce (Picea abies).

In some regions of the alpes, above 1300 metres, you can find magnificent Mountain Spruces, that are particularly useful as tonewood. These trees grow in a sunny and cold climate. The short growing season and the struggle for light make for straight trunks with tight and regular annual rings.

If the right tree is selected, cut, dried and split at the right time, the guitar top made from that tonewood will have one of the most important features: The best possible combination of light weight and high stiffness. For my guitars I select each top according to highest quality standards. Through individual construction methods, I can fully realise the potential that is in the wood.

THE CONCEPT

Model Spruce is charaterized by its transparency and clarity. A strong fundamental tone and a beautiful spectrum of overtones offer a rich palette of colours. Its sonic character is defined by an ideal balance of warmth and definition.

The solid top is jointed from two bookmatched halves of Spruce and reinforced with an asymmetrical fan bracing. Choosing the right wood for the body is an option to support the player's tone and sound aesthetics in the best possible way. Various types of Rosewood are particularily useful for that, but also Maple, Cypress or Satinwood.

I laminate the sides with Mahogany or Maple (Cypress and Maple are laminated with Rosewood). The neck is made of Mahogany (Khaya ivorensis) or Brasilian Cedar and reinforced by a carbon fibre rod. This construction allows for a very long sustain and a good sound projection.

Working out individual measurements that are ideal for the player, is part of my concept. By doing that, I can create an instrument that is particularly comfortable to play. Model Spruce is the right choice for guitarists who are looking for an instrument of high sensitivity for polyphony, strong projection and volume with a very malleable tone.
